Headaches and Chiropractic Care - Which Headache type do you get?
Headaches are incredibly common, but that doesn't mean you have to simply put up with them.
Headaches can have many different causes, including stress, muscle tension, prolonged screen time, poor sleep, poor posture, dehydration and changes in the muscles and joints of the neck. Understanding the type of headache you're experiencing can help guide appropriate management.
Common Types of Headaches
Cervicogenic HeadachesCervicogenic headaches originate from structures in the neck and are often felt on one side of the head. They may be associated with neck stiffness, reduced movement or pain that starts around the neck and travels towards the head.
Tension HeadachesTension-type headaches are often described as a dull, pressing or tightening sensation around the head. They can be associated with muscle tension through the neck, shoulders and upper back, and may occur during periods of stress or prolonged sitting.
MigrainesMigraines are more than just a headache. They can cause moderate to severe, often throbbing pain and may be accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. Some people also experience an aura, such as visual disturbances, before or during a migraine.
Cluster HeadachesCluster headaches are less common but can be extremely painful. They typically cause intense pain around or behind one eye and occur in repeated attacks, often around the same time of day. They may also cause a watery or red eye, nasal congestion or a drooping eyelid on the affected side.
How Can Chiropractic Help?
Chiropractic care may help some people experiencing certain types of headaches,

particularly headaches associated with the neck and musculoskeletal system.
At Ember Health Collective, we begin by assessing your neck, upper back, posture, movement and muscle tension to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.
Depending on your individual presentation, treatment may include:
Gentle spinal adjustments or mobilisation
Soft tissue techniques
Neck and upper back mobility exercises
Postural and ergonomic advice
Strength and rehabilitation exercises
The goal is to improve movement, address musculoskeletal contributors and help you manage your symptoms, if not prevent them from returning.
When Should You Seek Medical Advice?
Not every headache is caused by the neck or musculoskeletal system, and chiropractic care isn't appropriate for every type of headache.
A new, sudden or unusually severe headache should be assessed promptly. You should also seek medical attention if a headache is accompanied by symptoms such as weakness, confusion, difficulty speaking, vision changes, fever, loss of consciousness or other unusual neurological symptoms.
If headaches are becoming frequent or affecting your day-to-day life, having them assessed can help determine the most appropriate approach to management.
At Ember Health Collective, we take the time to understand your symptoms and create an individualised approach to your care.
